Exploring the Eastern Coast of Australia: My Experience at the Red Tent Event
Connecting with Culture and the Sacred Feminine: My Experience at the Red Tent Event at HearthGround.
During a trip touring the eastern coast of Australia, one of the most memorable experiences I had was attending the Red Tent Event at HearthGround, 60-acres of sacred Darug land located near the town of Colo, New South Wales. The Red Tent Event is a women-only gathering that takes place on the new moon each month, offering a space for women to connect, share stories, and honor the sacred feminine.
The Red Tent: A Sacred Space for Women's Gatherings at HearthGround.

As soon as I arrived at HearthGround, I could feel the powerful energy of the land. The property is maintained by Yia and Nick Alias, who have worked tirelessly to honor the original people of the land who suffered the first impact of colonization. Walking around the property, I was struck by the beauty of the landscape - the rolling hills, the vibrant greenery, and the crystal-clear creeks that flowed through the land.
During the Red Tent Event at HearthGround, we participated in a variety of activities, including:
Smudging Ceremony: The gathering was led by Yia who performed a smudging ceremony, burning a mixture of herbs to cleanse and purify our bodies and spirits.
Storytelling: We sat in a circle and shared stories about our lives, our challenges, and our dreams. It was a beautiful way to connect with one another and to honor our unique experiences as women.
Drumming and Dancing: We had a drum circle and danced around a fire. It was a powerful and energetic way to connect with the land and with one another.
Art Therapy: We had a chance to express ourselves creatively through art therapy. Using clay and gathered seeds, flora, and other natural materials from the HearthGround property, we created clay yonis, symbolizing the divine feminine and our connection to the land. It was a powerful and transformative experience, connecting us with our creativity and the natural world around us.
Feasting: Sumptuous meals seem to happen at HearthGround. Overall, feasting at HearthGround is a multi-layered experience that goes beyond just satisfying your hunger. It's about coming together as a community, sharing a meal with intention, and celebrating the earth and its bounty.
Overall, my experience at HearthGround and the Red Tent Event was a reminder of the importance of connecting to the land, to each other, and to our own inner wisdom. It was a humbling and inspiring experience, and one that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
If you're ever in the Colo area, I highly recommend checking out HearthGround and attending one of their events. It's an opportunity to connect with your inner landscape, and to deepen your own connection to the natural world.
Why Is Participating in a Red Tent Event So Important?
Participating in a Red Tent Event can be a transformative experience. At "Red Tent" gatherings, women inspired by the bestselling novel by Anita Diamant meet at the start of the monthly lunar cycle to connect with their bodies and each other. These gatherings provide a safe and supportive space for women to share their experiences and feelings, and to explore their connection to the cycles of nature and of womanhood.
The Red Tent Event held at HearthGround is a powerful example of how women can explore their identities and experiences while connecting with one another. The event includes a range of activities, such as storytelling, drumming, and art therapy, as well as the creation of a clay yoni using gathered seeds and flora from the HearthGround property. All of these activities are designed to help women tap into their inner wisdom and intuition and empower them in a supportive environment.
Participating in a Red Tent Event is not only beneficial for personal growth, but also for honoring and supporting sacred sites and cultures around the world. Acknowledging the harms of the past and to create new respectful stories on the land in order to create a better future for those to come.
How to Start Your Own Red Tent Event
If you're inspired by the idea of participating in a Red Tent Event and want to start your own, here are some tips to get you started:
Find a space: Look for a location that feels safe and welcoming, such as a community center, a private home, or a park. Make sure the space is comfortable and conducive to conversation and sharing.
Research the land: Make proper acknowledgement of the tribe/people who were the originals. Connect with the land. This will add authenticity to your experience. Show respect.
Set a date: Decide on a date and time that works for you and your potential participants. Consider the lunar cycle and aim for the new moon or full moon, which are traditionally associated with the Red Tent gatherings.
Spread the word: Use social media, word of mouth, and other channels to spread the word about your event. Be clear about the purpose and format of the gathering, and encourage women of all ages and backgrounds to attend.
Plan the activities: Think about what activities you want to include in your Red Tent Event. You can draw inspiration from the HearthGround event, such as storytelling, drumming, art therapy, or creating a clay yoni. You can also customize the activities to suit your own interests and preferences.
Set the tone: Create a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for your participants. Emphasize the importance of confidentiality, respect, and active listening. Encourage everyone to share their experiences and feelings without judgment or criticism.
Follow up: After the event, follow up with your participants to thank them for attending and to ask for feedback. Use their feedback to improve your future events and to build a community of women who support and empower each other.
Starting your own Red Tent Event can be a rewarding and empowering experience. It allows you to connect with other women in a meaningful way, to explore your own identity and experiences, and to honor the traditions and cultures that have shaped us all. So why not give it a try and see where it takes you?
